Paper Bag Jack-O-Lantern
Materials:  paper bag (lunch size), black marker, newspaper, rubber band, orange paint, and green paint

Procedure:  Stuff the paper bag with newspaper.  Twist the top closed, leaving room at the top for the stem of the pumpkin.  Close with the rubber band.  Paint the bag orange, except the top stem.  Paint the stem green.  You may want to tell your child to paint everything below the  rubber band orange, and everything above the rubber band green.  Let the bag dry.  After the bag is completely dry, draw triangles for the eyes and nose.  Use the same marker to draw a scary mouth. Color in the triangles on the face with the same marker.  Alternatively, you can cut the face features out on black construction paper and glue to the bag.


 
 
Halloween Popcorn Balls
Ingrediants: 1/2 cup sugar,1/4 cup margarine,1/2 cup light corn syrup,1/2 tsp. salt, few drops food coloring, 8 cups popped popcorn, gummy worms, candy corn

Procedure: Heat all ingredients except popcorn to simmering in dutch oven over medium high heat, stirring constantly.  Stir in popcorn.  Cook, stirring constantly, until popcorn is well coated, about 3 minutes: remove from heat and add gummy worms, candy corn, or other halloween candy.  Dip hands into cold water; shape mixture into 8 about 2 1/2 balls.  Place on waxed paper; cool completely.  Wrap individually in plastic wrap, or place in plastic bags and tie.

 
 
Jack-O-Lantern Sachet
Materials:  orange felt, black felt, glue, scissors, jack-o-lantern patterns, marker, fall scented potpourri

Procedure:  Cut out the jack-o-lantern pattern of your choice.  Cut the mouth, eyes, and nose out of the pumpkin. Trace the pumpkin on the orange felt and cut out 2 pumpkins.  Trace the mouth, eyes, and nose on the black felt and cut out.  Glue the facial features onto one of the pumpkins.  Glue the back of the pumpkin onto the front leaving a small opening to put in the potpourri.  Allow to dry.  Fill with potpourri and glue the small opening closed.


 
 
Window Jack-O-Lantern
Materials:  orange construction paper, jack-o-lantern pattern, scissors, pencil, tape, yellow cellophane wrap, green marker

Procedure:  Cut out the jack-o-lantern pattern.  Be sure to cut out the facial features.  Place the pattern on the orange construction paper and trace with the pencil along with the facial features.  Cut out the jack-o-lantern and cut out along with the face.  Cut the cellophane wrap just large enough to cover the eyes, nose, and mouth.  Tape the cellophane wrap to the jack-o-lantern.  Color the stem green and tape the jack-o-lantern in the window with the cellophane side facing out.


 
 
Ghost Puppet
Materials:  2 pieces of white felt, small piece of black felt or black yarn, scissors, marker, glue, 2 wiggly eyes, ghost pattern

Procedure:  Cut out the ghost pattern.  Trace the pattern onto the white felt with the marker and cut out the puppet.  Place a line of glue all the way around the puppet cut out, except for the bottom where the hand is inserted.  Lay the second puppet piece on top of the glue and press firmly.  At this point, a book can be placed on the puppet to hold the pieces in place while they dry.  Glue the eyes on the face of the puppet.  Cut the mouth from the black felt or make a mouth from a piece of black yarn.


 
 
Cottonball Ghost
Materials:  ghost pattern, pencil, cardstock, glue, scissors, 2 wiggly eyes, black yarn, hole punch, fishing line

Procedure:  Cut out the ghost pattern.  Trace the pattern onto the cardstock and cut out the ghost.  Spread a small amount of glue onto the ghost and place cotton balls on the ghost until all the cardstock is covered.  Demonstrate how to pull the cottonball to give it a wispy look.  Let dry.  Glue on the wiggly eyes and a piece of yarn for the mouth.  Punch a hole in the top of the ghost head and thread the fishing line through the hole.  Hang from the ceiling.


 
 
Handprint Ghost
Materials:  white finger paint, black paint, silver glitter, paper plate, black construction paper

Procedure:  Pour some white finger paint onto a paper plate and sprinkle with silver glitter.  Lay a piece of black next to the plate of paint.
Have child dip their hand into the paint with their fingers closed.  Carefully place their hand onto the black paper without spreading their fingers.  Allow to dry.  Cut around the handprint and turn upside down.  The palm of the hand is the ghost and the fingers are the bottom. Allow child to dip their finger into the black paint and then onto the ghost head to make finger print eyes. 


 
 
Pipe Cleaner Spiders 
Materials:  black pipe cleaners, picture book of spiders

Procedure:  Look at the picture book and discuss the shape of  the spiders and count the legs.  Form a circle with one of the pipe cleaners to represent the spiders head.  Loop a second pipe cleaner through the hole and twist it to keep it in place press out on the pipe cleaner till a larger circle forms.  The last step is to twist the eight legs onto the body of the spider.  Count each leg to make sure you have eight.  If the pipe cleaners are too long, cut them in half to make them easier to work with. 


 
 
Paper Plate Jack-O- Lantern
Materials:  paper plate, gold glitter, scissors, glue, orange paint

Procedure:  Paint the paper plate orange.  Allow to dry throroughly.  Squeeze glue on the plate where the eyes, nose, and mouth with be place.  Pour gold glitter onto the glue.  Let set for a few minutes and then gently shake off the excess glitter. 

 
 
Spider Webs
Materials:  paper plate, pie pan, black paint, white paint, marble, picture of a spider (draw or cut from a magazine)

Procedure:  Paint a paper plate black.  Let dry completely.  Place the paper plate in the pie pan and add a  small dab of white paint in the center of the paper plate.  Drop a marble onto the plate and roll it through the paint in all different directions.  Let dry.  Glue the spider on the web.


 
Footprint Ghosts
Materials:  black construction paper, white paint, paper plate, scissors, wiggly eyes

Procedure:  Pour the white paint onto the paper plate.  Place the construction paper next to the plate.  Have the child step into the white paint and then onto the construction paper.  Help the child lift their foot straight up from the paper so that the paint is not smeared.  Let the paint dry.  Cut around the footprint to remove any excess construction paper.  Glue the wiggly eyes to the heel part of the print to represent the ghost's head.


 
 
Halloween Votive
Materials:  baby food jar, votive candle, black and orange tissue paper, glue, water, bowl, paint brush

Procedure:  Place the baby food jar into a sink of water and soak until the label can be peeled from the jar.  Tear the tissure paper into pieces (not too small or the pieces will be hard to work with). Mix the glue and water into the bowl at about two parts glue and 1 part water.  Paint the tissue paper onto the jar by holding a piece on the jar and painting over the tissue paper with the glue and water.  Let dry and drop a votive candle into the jar.


 
 
Cookie Cutter Painting
Materials:  cookie cutters in halloween shapes, constuction paper, paint, paper plate, crayons

Procedure:   Pour the paint into paper plates.  One plate for each color of paint. Dip the cookie cutter into the paint and then press onto the construction paper.  Let the paint dry and then color the picture.


 
 
Jack-O-Lantern Muffins
Ingrediants: English Muffins, cheese whiz, raisins

Procedure:  Spread the cheese onto an English Muffin half.  Arrange the raisins into the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth.


 
 
Rice Krispie Jack-O-Lanterns
Ingredients:  box of Rice Krispies, orange food coloring, marshmallows, candies for decoration

Procedure:  Mix the Rice Krispie treats as according to the directions on the box; the only exception is to add orange food coloring to the marshmallows.  To make orange just mix yellow and red together.  When the mixture has cooled, roll it into balls and decorate them to look like jack-o-lanterns.  Try green gumdrops for the stem and candy corn for the eyes and nose.  Black licorice shoestrings can be cut and shaped for eyes and mouth.

THANKFUL WREATH
Materials:  orange or yellow construction paper, paper plate, scissors, tissue paper (fall colors), marker, 2-3 leaves, glue, string

Procedure:  Cut out an orange or yellow circle to fit the center of a paper plate and glue to the plate. Tear and crumple tissue paper and glue to the outside of the wreath covering all the white of the plate.  Glue two or three leaves to the center, bottom of the plate overlapping the leaves just a bit.  Discuss thankfulness, and ask the child what they are thankful for.  Assist the child in writing what they are thankful for in the center of the plate.  If necessary let the child dictate what they are thankful for and write their message for them. Attach a ribbon or string on the back to hang the wreath.


 
 
INDIAN CORN NAPKIN HOLDERS
Materials:  cardboard tubes (from paper towels), orange or brown construction paper, Indian corn, glue, scissors

Procedure:  Cut the cardboard tube into sections 1 inch wide.  Cut construction paper into 1 inch strips to cover the cardboard section.  Glue the construction paper onto the the cardboard.  Let dry.   Dab the back of each kernel of Indian corn with glue. Place the corn kernels on the ring, lining them in two rows; one at the top and one at the bottom.  If there is not enough corn available, glue one row in the center of the ring. Felt may be used instead of constrution paper for more durability.


 
 
Sweet Cornucopias
Ingredients:  box of Bugles, box of Fruity Pebbles, can of vanilla icing

Procedure:  Scoop a little of the vanilla icing into the Bugle and dip into the Fruity Pebbles.
